Edinburgh Day 17 (8/14)
Well, the hits keep coming and they don’t stop coming…
As we’ve been doing since the first team member tested COVID-positive, we’ve all been testing each morning. And, as our current luck would dictate, a third person tested positive today. We shuffled folks around housing ad best we could to provide everyone as safe and private a space as we could while folks isolate and heal, then the rest of the team prepped to have a (masked) put-in rehearsal - we hired a substitute mandolin player and our AD was going to go one as well. All in all, the rehearsal went well, but it was clear there was some anxiety within the team about returning to the stage. After some further discussion, the tough decision was made to cancel the remainder of shows for the week. While it was the right call, it did make a tough day tougher. Sadly, the universe wasn’t yet done with us.
I left from the venue and headed back towards Leith to the gym. Mr. Dislocated Elbow from 2 days ago was already back working out, albeit in a sling, so his injury seemed at least managed. Then, after working out I returned to our flat to clean up and figure out what to do for the rest of the day. Unfortunately around mid-afternoon, the group chat got a message from our producer that she’d had a fall and was headed to the ER. It turns out she stumbled on an uneven curb and likely injured her legs. Fortunately a couple of folks in an adjacent coffee shop came out to help her from the street, and stayed with her until our AD and I could get into town where she was. After nearly an hour from the incident, an ambulance arrived to get her to a hospital and seen for diagnosis and treatment. After examination and x-rays, she was found to have 2 fractures in one leg, and both sprained. She decided it would be best to get back to the states as fast as possible to give her the best chance at healing well. We got the rest of her stuff to the hotel she found (which allowed her to avoid stairs) as she made plans for her partner to fly out and help her get home.
This makes it almost (but not entirely) certain that we won’t be able to get back on stage for the remainder of EdFringe - but I think our hope is not to make that call until there’s for real no hope left. So, we’ll keep isolating and testing and hoping the team can recover enough to salvage some shows.
